About the WebP format
WebP is an image format introduced by Google in 2010. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, and is usually noticeably smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. Many websites now serve images as WebP, so “Save image as” often gives you a .webp file.
Every modern browser can display WebP, but some older desktop photo viewers and image editors still cannot open it. Opening the file in your browser lets you check it right away without installing anything.
