About the JPG format

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used photo format. It uses lossy compression: fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice is discarded to keep files small, which is why every phone and camera saves photos as JPG by default. JPG does not support transparency, and re-saving the same image repeatedly accumulates quality loss.

Cameras and phones write EXIF metadata into JPG files, recording when and with what settings a photo was taken. Viewing a photo at 1:1 also reveals compression artifacts such as blockiness and halos around edges, which helps you judge whether an image is sharp enough for printing or reuse.
