Why convert PNG to WebP

PNG is lossless and keeps every pixel exactly, but that makes photos and large graphics stored as PNG very heavy. WebP supports an alpha channel just like PNG, so transparent logos, stickers, and UI images can be converted without losing their transparent background, usually at a fraction of the size.

At the default quality the result is lossy WebP, which gives the biggest savings and is ideal for websites and apps. If you need pixel-exact output, for example for a source asset you will edit later, keep the original PNG. All modern browsers display WebP, but some older desktop software cannot open it.
